Reviews and Comments

“Using a Holga camera, Chapman has created a body of work that transports
the viewer to a dreamlike world where reality is reflected rather than accurately
depicted. The images are only minor manipulated during printing, revealing the
energy of the moment, rather than a realistic representation.”

- Katie Sutton, Director, International Photography Hall of Fame & Museum

“Lou Chapman, a slice-of-life journalist and songwrier from ‘way back, finds a
new method of regarding his surroundings in a striking pictorial display called
‘Plastic Lens, Square Images, Reflected Vision” … his first solo exhibition finds
Chapman applying a toy camera to a serious artistic vision.”

- Michael H. Price, Arts Editor, Fort Worth Business Press

“One of the most thought-provoking works (in the juried show ‘Essential
Elements,’ Hera Gallery, North Carolina) is offered by Lou Chapman, whose
‘Bastrop County, Texas, and the Roman Forum’ presents side-by-side gelatin
silver prints of emerging and ruined columns. The modern Texas scene appears
as a garish intrusion to the landscape, a testament to the 21st century’s addiction
to concrete and sprawl. The marble columns of Rome, on the other hand, despite
their visual similarity to the other scene, seem integrated into the modern cityscape.
The skewed perspective makes viewers challenge their assumptions about
architecture, and all art, in context. Growth that is considered essential in Texas
may be perceived as artless, while Rome’s essence depend upon its ruins and the
visual elements of decay in the landscape.”
